How to use it
A sinking fund is money set aside a little at a time for a cost you already know is coming, such as car registration, holiday gifts, a vacation or an annual subscription. To find the monthly amount, divide the goal by the number of months until it is due. A $600 bill due in 12 months works out to $50 a month. This tracker holds 6 funds on one page, each with its goal, due date, monthly amount and a box for every month of the year.
Write the name of each fund, the total and the due date, then the monthly amount. Each month, write what you actually moved into that fund in its box, so a skipped or smaller month is easy to spot and make up. Categories people often track this way include car repairs, insurance premiums, Christmas, birthdays, back-to-school costs, pet care, home repairs and annual memberships. Leave the Year field blank if you are starting partway through the year.
Printing tips
- Name each fund after the bill it covers rather than "misc".
- Fill in the fund that comes due soonest first.
- Keep it next to your bill tracker so yearly bills show up early.
- Print at 100% or "Actual size" on US Letter paper (8.5 x 11 in). If you are in a country that uses A4, choose "Fit to page" so nothing gets cut off at the edges.
Goes well with: free monthly bill tracker, holiday budget planner, monthly budget sheet.
FAQ
What is a sinking fund?
Money you set aside in small amounts for a known future cost, like a yearly insurance bill or holiday gifts.
How do I work out the monthly amount?
Divide the goal by the months left until it is due. For example, $600 due in 12 months is $600 / 12 = $50 a month.
How is a sinking fund different from an emergency fund?
A sinking fund is for a cost you know about in advance. An emergency fund is for costs you cannot predict, like a sudden repair.
Can I start it in the middle of the year?
Yes. Leave the Year field blank and start in any month; divide the goal by the months that are left.
Is it free?
Yes. Download and print it free for personal use, with no sign-up or email.
