How to use it
A zero-based budget gives every dollar of income a job before the month starts. This one-page sheet lists income sources, savings and debt payments, and 17 common expense categories from rent and groceries to subscriptions and pets, each with planned and actual columns.
At the start of the month, write your expected take-home pay, then assign amounts to savings and every expense until Income minus Expenses minus Savings equals zero. During the month, fill in the actual column from your bank app once a week. At month's end, compare planned and actual; the biggest gap is usually the easiest place to adjust next month. Groceries and dining out are the most common surprises.
Printing tips
- Use pencil for the planned column so you can adjust mid-month.
- Round up expenses to the nearest $5 to build in a small cushion.
- Keep the sheets in a folder to see trends over the year.
- Print at 100% or "Actual size" on US Letter paper (8.5 x 11 in). If you are in a country that uses A4, choose "Fit to page" so nothing gets cut off at the edges.
